During World War Two the Americans were able to get their colossal industrial out put into motion for the war effort. Among the many things they were able to do was build Liberty ships. These vessels were built at colossal speed and were able to carry all sorts of materials over to the United Kingdom. One such vessel was a Liberty ship called SS Richard Montgomery. It was filled with ammunition and ready to cruise out of the River Thames and into the North sea, heading south towards the channel and to Normandy, where allied troops had landed in June 1944.
A fatal accident for the ship occurred and she run aground, in the Thames estuary, near the Isle of Sheppy off Kent county to the south and my town of Southend-on-Sea in the county of Essex to the north. To this day, the SS Montgomery still contains 1,500 tons of explosives upon the broken and sunken vessel. From Kent and Essex, the masts of the SS Montgomery can be seen at low tide. Render safe, or remove wreck of liberty ship SS Richard Montgomery of the coast sheerness Kent England. The ship sunk 67 years ago 20 august 1944 containing 1400 tons of high explosive some still in primed condition and libel to explode without warning. The wreck also may contain mustard gas or other chemical agents the existence of which cannot be confirmed or denied under a freedom of information enquiry.
